Alpaca Rugs: Hypoallergenic and Luxurious
They’re fluffy, they’re cute, and I have two in my backyard. I’m talking about alpacas, of course! Ever since my daughter purchased them nine years ago as a FFA project, they have been a quirky part of my everyday life. The adorable, fluffy relatives to camels have become increasingly popular in the past few years, but they have been prized for their fur (called fiber or fleece) in South America for thousands of years. Now, you may be thinking, “Why are you talking about alpacas in a interior design blog?” The answer is simple–alpaca rugs.
That’s right, I’m kicking off this month’s series on flooring with a luxurious accent piece you won’t find anywhere else in the state.
Why You’ll Love Them
Hypoallergenic. Alpaca fiber is hollow, unlike wool which is filled with lanolin. Those who are allergic to wool have a reaction to the lanolin. Since alpaca fiber is hollow, it is a safe option for those with wool allergies.
Cooling. These rugs are made from suri alpaca. Suri alpaca fiber grows in silky pencil ringlets and possesses a unique quality–the fiber and products made from it are cool to the touch. The sensation is pleasant, not overwhelming, and adds to the luxurious feel of the rugs.
No shedding. Unlike wool rugs, alpaca rugs do not shed when new.
Natural color. With 16 natural, officially recognized colors, alpaca fiber is used to create breathtaking color patterns without any dye. This is great for those with sensitivities. Dyed options are also available, however.
