In the world of interior design, there are those who craft beautiful spaces, and then there are visionaries who redefine the art of design. At Ellie Ann's Interior Design, we are privileged to be led by one such visionary: Susan, the Founder, and Lead Designer.

Join us as we share Susan's journey, her profound love for design, and the driving force behind the establishment of Ellie Ann's Interior Design.

What initially sparked your interest in interior design?

My journey into the world of interior design wasn't sparked by a single moment of inspiration; it was more of a gradual realization. I actually started my college career in radiology, motivated by a desire to honor my grandma Fern, who had battled ovarian cancer. I had accompanied her to a couple of her radiation appointments, and it was a way for me to pay tribute to her.

But as I progressed in the Radiology program, it became clear that it wasn't where my true passion lay. I needed to be in a creative field, a space where I could channel my inner artist. Interior design, along with fashion design, was one of those creative pursuits that had always intrigued me.

Tell us about the journey that led you to establish Ellie Ann's Interior Design.

The establishment of Ellie Ann's Interior Design was a profound moment in my life. You see, it wasn't just about starting a business; it was about creating a legacy and being a role model for my daughters, Laura Ellen and Julianne. I wanted them to see that with dedication, hard work, and the courage to follow your passion, you can achieve your dreams.

The name "Ellie Ann's" itself is a beautiful blend of their names, Laura Ellen and Julianne, symbolizing the deep familial connection and love that drives my passion for design.

Starting my own business naturally came with uncertainties and challenges. It's a path where you have to embrace the unknown and learn as you go. You won't have all the answers right from the start, and that's perfectly okay. The key is to keep learning and growing as you navigate this incredible journey.

What aspects of interior design do you find most fulfilling and inspiring?

For me, the heart of interior design lies in those moments when I collaborate with clients who are unapologetically themselves. It's incredibly inspiring and motivating to work with individuals who are excited to showcase their unique design aesthetic and personality to the world.

These are the projects that truly light up my creative spirit. There's nothing quite like witnessing the genuine essence of my clients coming to life in their living spaces. It's a rewarding and fulfilling experience that reminds me why I fell in love with interior design in the first place.

Could you share a project that holds special significance to you?

Certainly! There are two types of projects that hold special places in my heart. The first is when I work with clients who are exceptionally in touch with their own identities and are ready to express it boldly through design. They know themselves and do not apologize for what they want.

These projects are incredibly fulfilling because they are real and authentic. The clients are unapologetically themselves, and it's a joy to help them translate that into their living spaces.

Another memorable project was when I had the opportunity to enhance the work of a family member. This project was particularly close to my heart because it allowed me to build upon and enhance the legacy of a loved one while still preserving their unique touch. It was a meaningful experience that deepened my connection to the world of design.

Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to aspiring interior designers?

Looking back at my journey, I would offer this advice to aspiring interior designers: Define your own version of success. Challenges and failures are a part of the journey, but they only make you stronger. Embrace those moments as opportunities to learn and grow. Surround yourself with the right people who can help you learn quicker and work more intelligently, not just harder.

When I was starting out, having access to different coaches and participating in interior design forums made a significant difference in my growth. They provided invaluable insights and accelerated my progress, especially in the last four years. So, never underestimate the power of seeking guidance and building a supportive network.

My journey in interior design is a testament to the power of embracing your true passion, persevering through challenges, and continually evolving as a designer. My dedication to this craft and my commitment to authenticity have not only shaped my career but have also inspired those I've had the privilege to work with.
